Virgin Media O2 announces expanded social broadband tariffs
Virgin Media O2 has recently announced that even more people in the UK can now benefit from its social broadband tariffs, which is good news for those who have been hit hardest by the cost-of-living crisis in the country.
Eligibility for Social Tariffs
The mobile operator has revealed that the Essential Broadband and Essential Broadband Plus social tariffs are available to 9.7 million people in the UK who receive one of the following:
- Income-based Employment Support Allowance (I-ESA)
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (I-JSA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit (PC)
- Universal Credit (UC)
Virgin Media O2 has become one of the first major UK carriers to fully integrate the Department for Work and Pensions’ social tariff checking tool, allowing many low-income families to benefit from fast, reliable and affordable broadband.
Social Tariffs’ Benefits and Costs
The Essential Broadband plan costs £12.50 per month and offers an average download speed of 15Mbps and an average upload speed of 2Mbps. Previously, this plan was only available to those receiving Universal Credit. Last year, the carrier introduced the Essential Broadband Plus tariff, which offers an average download speed of 54Mbps and an average upload speed of 5Mbps for just £20 per month. Both Essential Broadband plans come with a 30-day rolling contract that can be cancelled anytime, with no activation fees.
