“Bluesky” Jack Dorsey’s Twitter Competitor Now Available in Closed Beta on iOS App Store

Elon Musk’s Acquisition of Twitter

In April 2022, Elon Musk initiated the acquisition of Twitter, which was concluded in October 2022. This prompted Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey to promptly exit the company back in May of last year. After his departure, Dorsey began working on his version of a new decentralized social network, called Bluesky, which is meant to compete with Twitter.

Bluesky’s Private Beta

Bluesky has a homepage on the internet and a blog, allowing people to sign up for the private beta. The project was announced in 2019, but no updates had been given on when this venture would be officially unveiled to the public. However, Bluesky is now available on the iOS App Store as an invite-only beta app, meaning that one must have an invite code to create an account. There is also a waitlist to sign up for the service, but no information is available on when that round of codes will be released.

Competition with Twitter and Mastodon

It remains to be seen how Bluesky will fare once it launches publicly and begins to compete with Twitter and the currently most popular decentralized social network, known as Mastodon. Since the app is currently in closed beta on iOS only, its hard to gauge interest unless you are behind the curtain, so for now all we can do is wait and see.
