Google’s At a Glance Widget Getting New Location Proximity Features
If you own a Pixel phone, you probably love the At a Glance widget that enables you to see a quick summary of important information on your lock screen and launcher. And as if it wasn’t useful enough, Google has been updating the widget frequently with new capabilities designed to make it even better.
Now, the widget is receiving two new location proximity features to help regular commuters and frequent flyers. Even more useful, the widget could make it easier for people to make decisions about driving through or parking at airports based on flight arrival times.
A recent APK teardown by 9to5Google indicates that the latest beta version of the Google app (v14.11) is preparing to add more functionality to the At a Glance widget. Specifically, there’s a new “Near Airport” string that lets you “See Arrivals Schedule,” potentially providing this information when you’re approaching the airport.
The “Near Transit Station” feature could be used to determine if you’re close to a bus or train station and will let you “See Arrival and Departure Times” in the widget on the home screen and lock screen. Tapping on the widget could open up the Transit tab for your location in Google Maps.
Since the tiny space on the widget will likely make it a challenge to provide all of the information necessary, it remains unclear how the feature will convey all of the relevant data. However, since the features are still in the development stages, there’s plenty of time for them to evolve and improve.
Overall, the At a Glance widget is undoubtedly becoming even more valuable for all those who use it. As usual, Google has once again proven their dedication to providing users with an excellent experience through constant updates and improvements.
