Samsung releases February 2023 security update for Galaxy Note 20 series before Google
At the beginning of February 2023, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S23 series, featuring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, a 200MP primary camera, and other enhancements. Despite the major device launch, Samsung has not delayed its monthly security patch release, as it has started rolling out the February 2023 security update for the Galaxy Note 20 series already. Currently, the update is only available in Switzerland via GWB1 firmware, with no other new features or improvements included. Soon, the update should be obtainable in other European nations as well. Samsung has beaten Google to updating devices to the latest monthly security patch once more, who commonly release updates for Pixel devices on the first Monday of each month.
The Galaxy Note 20 series is Samsung’s last flagship Note phone, which first launched in the middle of 2020. Since then, it has received three OS updates, and according to Samsung’s software support policy, the Note 20 series is ineligible to receive the Android 14 update. However, Samsung will continue to send security updates to the device for the time being. In contrast, last month, the Galaxy Note 10 was the first Samsung device to receive January 2023’s security patch.
At the Galaxy S23 launch event, Samsung announced that One UI 5.1 would soon be available on other Galaxy devices. Therefore, Samsung may potentially delay the February 2023 update rollout for its current flagship devices. Once customers receive the S23, Samsung could release One UI 5.1 alongside the February 2023 patch for eligible devices.
