The iPhone: Iconic Design, But What’s Next?
Since the iconic original iPhone, Apple has released some seriously impressive designs, from the universally beloved iPhone 4 to the slim and durable iPhone 5, and the comfortable iPhones 6, 7, 8, and X. Of course, the Apple logo helps make the designs stand out, but with modern slab phones, it’s difficult to make them look totally unique.
Android Phone-Makers Find Ways to Stand Out
Android phone-makers have found ways to add some flair to their designs, making some head-turning smartphones. OnePlus 7 Pro made an impression with its pop-up selfie camera, while Huawei P20 Pro, P30 Pro, and P40 Pro have eye-catching colors, and the P40 Pro has a ceramic glass back and the first “overflow screen”. Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra looks like it means business, and Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra and Mix 4 have features like an under-display camera. Google’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro also stand out, with the Pixel 6 Pro’s Sorta Sunny color and camera bar being especially recognizable.
iPhone 15 Pro: Same Yet Different?
The recently leaked iPhone 15 Pro may not be as “new” as some rumors suggested, with its slightly rounded edges and thinner bezels. For some, a “new design” means an updated look with something new, while for others it means a complete upgrade or redesign. It may be difficult for a regular person to tell the iPhone 15 Pro apart from the iPhone 14 Pro.
Android Phones Offer More Personality
Android phones offer more personality than iPhones, with their rich software customization options and massive design choice. Xiaomi’s 12S Ultra looks like a camera, the Pixel 7 Pro has a unique horizontal camera housing, and the Nothing Phone 1 stands out in its own way.
The Departure of Jony Ive
The departure of Apple’s lead hardware designer Jony Ive in 2019 left a void in the company’s design vision, but he has kept busy with designs like the emblem for King Charles’ coronation and a “magically transforming” red nose. Apple is not looking for a direct replacement, shuffling around existing hardware designers instead.
iPhone Users Deserve a Fresh Design
iPhone users deserve a fresh new design, and the iPhone 15 Ultra or iPhone 16 may offer better cameras, which could lead to a different design. Apple may need to take more risks to make the iPhone’s rear look new, and there are talented people online who will design the 2024 iPhone 16 for free.
