UK Government Bans TikTok from Phones and Devices Used by Ministers and Civil Servants
In recent times, TikTok has been facing backlash from governments all around the world. The popular social media app has been banned on government-owned devices in the US, and the European Commission also decided to ban the app on employees’ devices. The UK government has now joined these actions by banning the app from phones and other devices used by government ministers and civil servants due to security concerns.
The Reason Behind the Ban
According to Bloomberg, the ban comes after a review that revealed certain platforms, including TikTok, pose a risk in terms of accessing and using sensitive government data. Oliver Dowden, the Cabinet Office Minister, stated that the ban is a “precautionary move”.
TikTok’s Response
TikTok’s ownership by ByteDance has led to fear that the Chinese government could gain access to the data on devices used by political leaders and officials. A TikTok spokesperson expressed their disappointment in the UK government’s decision and stated that they believe the ban is based on fundamental misconceptions and influenced by wider geopolitical factors that TikTok and its UK users are not involved in. They also claimed that TikTok doesn’t hand users’ data to the Chinese government. However, Chinese intelligence laws require companies to aid the Chinese government when asked.
